Travelling with a Carer

You must travel with a Carer if you:

  • Do not meet our Independent Travel Criteria; or
  • You want or need to perform any of the following tasks during a flight but cannot do so without assistance:
    • Consume food and beverages (Cabin Crew can assist with opening any packaging);
    • Attend the toilet (including getting to and from the toilet); or
    • Administer any medication (including Epi Pens).

Where the above does not apply but you require assistance transferring into and out of your own wheelchair/airport/aisle wheelchair/aircraft seat and your weight exceeds 130kg*, you will need to arrange someone to facilitate these transfers. If you are travelling domestically within Australia you can arrange for an Assistance Person.

If you intend to travel to or from an international port you will be required to travel with a Carer because individuals without a boarding pass are restricted from entering the immigration and security screening area of International Ports on departure and arrival.

* Due to our Health & Safety requirements, we are unable to transfer Guests who are more than 130kg in weight. In these circumstances we can only assist with lower body transfers (guidance of the lower body/legs whilst transferring).

Your Carer will also be entitled to receive the internet ticket price rate when booking. Please contact our Guest Contact Centre for more information.

Carer Requirements:

A person who acts as your Carer must be physically and mentally able to assist you :

  • Meet the Independent Travel Criteria;
  • Consume food and beverages (if you want or need to perform these tasks during a flight but cannot do so without assistance);
  • Attend to your toileting requirements, including getting to you and from the toilet (if you want or need to perform this task during a flight but cannot do so without assistance);
  • Administer any medication (if you want or need to perform this task during a flight but cannot do so without assistance).

Please call our Guest Contact Centre for more information.

Travelling with an Assistance Person

If you are travelling domestically within Australia you can arrange for an Assistance Person to assist you to and from your seat.

For example, you may satisfy our Independent Travel Criteria but may weigh more than 130kg* and require assistance to transfer from your wheelchair to an airport/aisle wheelchair and from an airport/aisle wheelchair to an aircraft seat and vice versa.

You must arrange an Assistance Person to assist you in this situation. Assistance Persons do not need to travel with you but will need to assist you on board the aircraft prior to departure and upon arrival at your destination (i.e. you will usually require two Assistance Persons).

You must notify us at the time of booking of the need for an Assistance Person so that the necessary security requirements can be met. An Assistance Person does not have to travel with you but must assist you with:

  • Transferring into and out of the wheelchair and aircraft seat (the Assistance Person must be physically capable of lifting or transferring you), AND
  • With movement onboard the aircraft prior to departure and upon arrival, AND
  • During an on ground emergency / terminal evacuation.

Assistance Persons are only for Australian domestic flights.

If you intend to travel to or from an international port you will be required to travel with a Carer as individuals without a boarding pass are restricted from entering the immigration and security screening area of International Ports on departure and arrival.

*Due to our OHS regulations, we are unable to transfer Guests who weigh more than 130kg. In these circumstances we can only assist with lower body transfers (guidance of the lower body/legs whilst transferring)
